Performance Notes

× Engaging youth from all parts of the region, the “Youth: Place-Making Cowichan” design charrette competition is meant to stimulate youth empowerment in speaking out about the issues and opportunities within the region for our communities to be more vibrant and inclusive. Youth use public spaces more than any other group within our society, yet are often not included in the process of designing these spaces, and most are not designed with youth in mind.

This design charrette competition is asking groups of youth to select a site to design within their local area, to address the issues or opportunities of that site. The process will encourage them to design in response to youth needs, accessibility, climate change, community safety, social cohesion, transportation, recreation, housing, and economic development … to name a few challenges they might be taking on!

At the end of the process, each group will present to a panel of independent judges at an event open to the public. There will also be a “People’s Choice Award” based on the audiences perception of which design should receive an award.
